Kyoto & Tokyo: A Photographic Journey with Ted Forbes and David Brookover

from $3,500.00

Initial payment is $3,500 deposit
(Full tuition is $12,000 — see additional details further below.)

OVERVIEW
Kyoto & Tokyo—A Photographic Journey is an opportunity to join David Brookover, Ted Forbes, and fellow photographers for a one-of-a-kind adventure in Japan.

Our December journey aligns with the shift from autumn to winter—temperatures will be cool yet comfortable, colorful leaves will linger on the trees, and the seasonal light will be just right.

With cameras in hand we’ll immerse ourselves in two different cities—ready to explore cultural highlights and inspired to photograph the beauty and wonder of new surroundings.

“...the Japanese aesthetic is less about accumulation than subtraction, so that whatever remains is everything.” -- Pico Iyer

Throughout our 11 days together we’ll encounter a mix of traditional and modern Japanese culture as we visit iconic temples & shrines, distinct neighborhoods, popular attractions, and “insider” locales.

You’ll find opportunities to shoot familiar and favorite subjects—people, the street, nature & landscape—but should also expect to be challenged by new ideas, motifs and approaches to your work.

This experience will stretch your creative and photographic practices while expanding your image portfolio. There will be ample time for individual attention as well as group learning as you travel with David and Ted.

Key Components and Content:

  • Two virtual “prep” sessions will occur several weeks prior to gathering in Japan. During these online sessions you’ll meet fellow photographers, preview itinerary details, consider key cultural and photo-historical contexts for the trip, and get tips for what to pack!

  • Immersion and discovery in two different Japanese cities: Kyoto and Tokyo.

    • In Kyoto, visit and photograph everything from the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to the Nanzenji Temple. Featured highlights include a maiko photoshoot, a trip to the best Honky Tonk in Japan, and a visit to the Benrido Collotype Atelier.

    • In Tokyo, experience the personality and visual characteristics of multiple neighborhoods—from traditional markets and shinto shrines to high end fashion areas and the Imperial Palace.

    • Each city location also includes a day trip to a unique cultural site. From Kyoto, we’ll travel to Nara, dubbed the “Central Park” of Japan. From Tokyo we’ll venture out to the coast to take in Hiroshi Sugimoto’s treasured Enoura Observatory.

    • Local guides will join us in each city to offer insights and ease travel logistics, allowing David and Ted to focus fully on teaching.

  • Photography guidance in both one-to-one and group contexts will focus on topics such as individual strengths and style, composition techniques, subject matter selection, available light, and more.

  • An online reunion post-trip to share photographs from the experience.
